Finding Passion, Peace, and Home in Khaolak with A SUP World Champion, Daniel Hasulyo

Having been traveling around the world, Daniel Hasulyo, a SUP World Champion and a Pro Athlete, has finally found his home here in Khaolak, Thailand, which is situated in another continent from his natal country, Hungary. Let's deep dive into his life's path to see how come he chose to live in this tiny town in the South of Thailand.

Passion lifts up the soul

In his childhood, every summer break, his family had always been going to different places in the world: Croatia, the Canary Islands, Brazil, etc., because both of his parents were very athletic and they wanted their children to find what they'd like to do. Daniel tried wind surfing before SUP paddling existed and it slowly made him connect with the ocean and the water. In 2011, he and his brother paddled down the Danube River for 2,800 km in 38 days. Since then, he realized that he wanted to pursue his dream as a water-sport athlete.

At the age of 34, the light in his eyes still sparkles when he talks about how incredible and powerful the ocean is. Even though he has been in this circle for about 20 years, the ocean has taught him new things everyday. As there are various kinds of landscape and environmental condition at each location, he discovered that the water here in Khaolak is clearer and cleaner comparing to the sea in other parts of Thailand and other countries.

Daniel had lived in many towns before, but Khaolak has everything offered for him, whether it's the job at SUNOVA, the perfect sea that he could practice and exercise all year, the lovely people in this small town, or the time with his family. So at the end, his passion for what he loves drives the joy in life and gradually provides necessity in every aspects for him.

Nature contributes to those who live with it

We cannot reject that the environment also shapes our health, Daniel as well. As his career depends so much on the strength of the body, where he lives plays an important role on that. Surely, residing near the beach and the ocean helps him a lot because they are his office comparing with a 9-5 job. But other than that, the food he eats and the fresh air he breathes in also another crucial energy that fuels both his physical and mental health.

Surrounded by blue ocean and green forest is as special as surrounded by the loved ones. The kind people keep his heart and soul here, especially his family. In summary, considering these elements above has allowed him to get to live the life aligning with his desire. Waking up to the pure nature, practicing and working out to keep him fit for the upcoming competition, getting to spend time with his daughter, and just balancing life itself are the process to build Khaolak his home.

Khaolak and its future as a Surf Town

There's no one more perfect to ask about how Khaolak is going to look like in the next 10 years. As a pro athlete who's been connected to the ocean for most of his life, Daniel has no doubt that there will be more and more people from here and there coming to experience and witness the beauty of nature in this town. Moreover, he sees the potential of the young surfers here that will definitely impact and make Khaolak even more well-known. With the new generation, the image of surf culture will be fresh and constantly changing as everything does, but moving forward means that change is always for the better.

He couldn't agree more that Khaolak is suitable for a surfer lifestyle. Because of the long beach of Phang Nga, various wave conditions are exclusive for everyone, whether you're a beginner or a professional, specific areas are friendly for different surfer levels. Additionally, water factors allow the possibility to be able to surf all year round. Even if there's no wave, you can still paddle a SUP board on flat water.

Not only as a Surf Town, but he also hopes that Khaolak would be such a great hub for people with a healthy lifestyle. Other than surfing and water sports, many wellness activities like running, yoga, sound healing, or ice bath are regularly practiced here. Therefore, combining these elements of nature, activities, and people would create more than just an attraction, but a community that is strong and sustainable against time.

Although everyone can easily access to see parts of the world nowadays, it wouldn't be as wonderful to experience and feel the beauty of places and people in front of yourself. Thus, just let loose and allow yourself to explore. Visiting Khaolak might lead you to try new things like SUP board paddling, which is available for rent at Memories Surfhouse, or witness the charm of mother earth. Maybe you would possibly find home" here just like Daniel did.
